Makenzie graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and began her career as a research assistant at The Hoare Lab, where she focused on the clinical translation of hydrogels. Some of her research contributions have been featured in academic publications. She later joined Hyde Engineering and Consulting as a Cleaning Validation Specialist and now serves as a Cleaning Validation Subject Matter Expert (SME) at Sanofi in Toronto. In this role, she leads cleaning validation projects and plays an active role in the Sanofi Global Community of Practice
