Dr. Farzad Khalvati is Director of Radiology AI in the Department of Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Senior Scientist and Endowed Chair in Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence in the Neurosciences & Mental Health Program at SickKids Research Institute, and Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Imaging and Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto, with cross-appointments in Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. He is also a Faculty Affiliate at the Vector Institute.
Dr. Khalvati directs the Intelligent Medical Informatics Computing Systems (IMICS) Lab at SickKids, leading the design, validation, and deployment of AI for early diagnosis, prognosis, and individualized treatment planning using multimodal imaging and health data. His research emphasizes interpretable, human-centered AI and equitable access to healthcare.
As Director of Radiology AI, he provides strategic leadership for a clinically driven research enterprise in precision medicine including radiology, oncology, and neurology. He has built multidisciplinary programs supported by over $7M in competitive funding, more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, and 75 peer-reviewed conference abstracts, while mentoring over 100 trainees, research staff, and junior faculty. He also leads two core AI-in-medicine courses and advances translational pathways for clinical validation and deployment, positioning the department as a leader in AI-enabled radiology to improve patient outcomes and equitable care.
