Dr. Wanxing Cui is Director of the Cell Therapy Manufacturing Facility at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where he oversees an FDA-registered operation accredited to the standards of the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) and the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). Under his leadership, the facility supports MedStar Georgetown’s Pancreatic Islet Transplantation, Stem Cell Transplant, and Cellular Immunotherapy programs.
Dr. Cui’s career in cell therapy began with surgical training in Shenyang, China, followed by a PhD in Molecular Medicine from Kyoto University, Japan, where his research focused on the development of a bioartificial pancreas. He brings more than 27 years of expertise in pancreatic islet transplantation, with over 70 peer-reviewed publications and multiple biotechnology patents to his name.
Beyond his facility leadership, Dr. Cui contributes broadly to the advancement of cell therapy standards and inspection practice. He serves as an AABB assessor and a FACT inspector, and is a member of the AABB Cellular Therapies Section Coordinating Committee. He participates in the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy (ISCT) iPSC Joint and Lab Practice Committees. Since March 2025, he has served as Co-Chair of the NMDP Cell Therapy Lab Alliance. He also mentors in the ISCT Professional
Education Program (PEP) and the AABB Early Stage Professionals (ESP) program.
