Vice Provost, Academic Affairs


Professor Antonio Moreira is Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Prior to his current position, he has been Chair of the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology, and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. Prior to UMBC, Prof. Moreira spent 10 years in the private sector where he held senior administration positions with International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. and Merck & Co. (then Schering-Plough Corp.), both in New Jersey. He is a frequent guest speaker at international conferences and symposia, has authored and co-authored over 250 publications and presentations, and continues to be active in biomanufacturing research, regulatory science and workforce development activities.

Prof. Moreira is originally from Portugal where he obtained his BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Porto. He went on to obtain his MS and PhD in chemical and biochemical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA and did post-doctoral work at the University of Waterloo in Canada. He was honored by the President of the Republic of Portugal with the National Order of Public Education and awarded the title of Comendador. He is an Honorary International Member of the Brazilian Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and is currently Chair of the Board of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering Foundation.
